Scores of people showed up to the Yaak River Tavern and Mercantile’s annual Winter Festival event held Friday through Sunday, Feb. 15 through 18. The event featured a cross country skiing competition, a snow sculpture contest, the infamous outhouse races, and the crowning of the 2018 Winter Festival Queen.
Four teams competed in the outhouse races for grand champion and best of show prizes. The three person teams were required to move their outhouses complete with toilet paper and toilet seat across the finish line with the fastest time to win. The winning team “Pants on Fire” was comprised of members of the Yaak Volunteer Fire Department who built and raced their outhouse.
Left: Danya Papac was named Winter Festival Queen. Four contestants entered the contest and showed off their costumes in the camouflage and evening wear categories. The contestants also had to score in the Yaak Trivia arena as well as the question and answer category, testing the girls knowledge of Montana living.
Above: Cross country skiing and snow sculpting were also featured events. Snow sculpture teams were comprised of one to five members. Teams were assigned a 4x4x4 foot mound of snow to create their masterpieces. Teams were not allowed to use power tools. The contest winners were a team of boy’s from Turning Winds School in the Yaak.
