Tuesday, August 1—

4:41 p.m.  A Libby couple reported they had been watching a mysterious bright object in the northern sky near the horizon. It kept changing colors but stayed in the same location. Officers also observed the mystery. The national UFO center was called and will be checking into the matter and getting back with an explanation. The National Guard was advised.

 

Saturday, August 3—

A Yaak area man called and then came in to LCSO to report that a vehicle made a left turn on Mineral Ave. and Hwy. 2 without using his turn signal.

*** Consumer Reports concluded,
despite all the ad hype and whoopla, cola is cola is cola and most people
can’t tell the difference between Coke, Pepsi, Shasta cola, and numerous other off-brands. The magazine’s conclusion? Buy the cheapest!

 

Monday, July 29 (1991)

KALISPELL—  Donna Moore, 26, the Kalispell woman who admitted hiring
a man to kill her estranged husband
in a child-custody dispute, was sentenced to 25 years in prison, with
15 years suspended.

 

—- Rolling Stone reported that every day, the average McDonald’s restaurant thows away 81 pounds of unsold food– a daily total of 694,000 pounds of food nationwide.

 

Thursday, August 1 (1991)

The Internal Revenue Service said
it has been nosing around and surreptitiously spying on the Church Universal and Triumphant in Corwin Springs, Montana, since 1987, trying unsuccessfully to prove the bizarre sect is not worthy of tax-exempt status.

 

Monday, August 4 (1991)

KALISPELL—  A 17-year old Kalispell girl was arrested early Saturday for criminal trespass after she reportedly was found on the roof of actor Keifer Sutherland’s home on the east shore
of Whitefish Lake.

 

Wednesday, August 7 (1991)

SEATTLE—  A thief who tried to siphon gas from a motor home got a mouthful of sewage instead. “Apparently, the suspect was attempting to steal gasoline and got the swage tank instead,” Officer Tom Umporowicz reported. Officers found sewage and what looked like vomit on the ground. Nearby they found a 14-year old boy curled up ill next to a car. “It’s the best laugh I’ve ever had,” the motor home owner told police.

 

Friday, August 24 (2001)

LIBBY—  Libby High School’s first
football game of the season on Sept. 1 will be held in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, because the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has not finished removing asbestos-contaminated vermiculite from underneath the LHS track and field buildings. EPA says the track will be ready for us by Sept. 14.
