The 100th birthday of the National American Legion (1919 to 2019) was celebrated on Saturday, March 16 at our local Post with a dinner and an awards ceremony. The event packed the Legion’s building located at 319 California Ave. in Libby.  The potluck event had plenty of food to go around, and a large birthday cake for all to enjoy.

Joe Johnston, Adjutant and Finance Officer told The Montanian that the, “Austin F. Reedy Post 97 has a total of 184 members, of which eight are women. Twenty-on members also have 40 or more years of service.”

Our local Post also boasts having 31 Paid Up for Life Members, called PUFLers, the most of any American Legion in the state of Montana.

The Legion’s Auxiliary has 87 members, and it is the largest in District 4 which includes eleven towns in Northwest Montana.

The service awards were given to members for service in 5-year increments. Around 30 volunteers were honored. Their commitments ranged from five years to over 60 years of service. Three auxiliary members were also honored.

Irene Loveless who has volunteered with the American Legion Auxiliary for over 55 years received flowers, so did Terry Pitcher, Auxiliary Secretary, who was also recognized for all the work she does for the Post to make sure things run smoothly.

The celebration ended with an evening of live music from the Hi Tek Red Neks and an early celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day.

The American Legion sponsors many local youth activities including American Legion Baseball, Montana Boys State, Girls State, and local scholarships.

The Austin F. Reedy  Post 97 will celebrate their own 100th birthday in 2021, and planning is already in the works.
