The annual Wings Benefit

Story continued

Then on Saturday May 4th the Yaak Community is holding their annual “Cinco de Mayo” Mexican Buffet and live auction fundraiser at the Yaak River Tavern.  There will be bucket raffles and silent auction items on display starting around Noon. Then right after dinner the live auction begins. This is an exciting event and well worth the trip to the Yaak.

This tradition began in 1997 with Suzanna and Keith Hagerty, (previous owners of the Yaak River Mercantile and Tavern) who hosted the first Wings live auction and Cinco De Mayo dinner. They wanted to extend the fundraising for WINGS to the Yaak.  Throughout the years the Mercantile has switch hand but never lost the Wings fundraising tradition. Current owner Gwen Allen continues the WINGS celebration tradition.

On Tuesday, May 7th there will be “Bowling for Wings” in Libby at the Lincoln Lanes. You need to sign up ahead of time for this event. Please call 293-7842 or 293-4380. This event is sponsored by our Wings Clowns.

May 8th is “Dollar Day” or “Fill the Bucket”. In the past, our Wings volunteers have canvased their neighborhoods to ask for donations.

“This year we will be doing things a little differently. “ said Stinkney

Stinkney added “We will be setting up stations with volunteers at several areas in Libby and Troy to accept donations.”

The “Fill the Bucket” stations will be located in parking lots from Noon to 6pm, making it easy for folks to pull in and drop off their donations.

In Libby, stations will be set up at next to Johnnies Auto, Empire Foods, the old Drive Inn Theater and  the Libby Hotel.

In Troy a station will be set up in the parking lot in front of Trojan Lanes.

The fundraising continues with the Motorcycle Poker Run, on  Saturday, May 11. Signup will begin at 11am at the Switchback Restaurant, with kickstands up at Noon. There will be five stops ending at the Libby VFW. While the event is listed as a motorcycle run, those of you with “four wheels” are also welcome to join. The VFW will be serving a BBQ Rib dinner that night as well.

The last function will be held later in the year. It is the fun and ambitious “Yaak Wings Walk” which is scheduled for September 7th. The WINGS walk was started in 2014 by Roberta DeNeau, a local resident which was held in May. It was started in honor of a local resident, Linda Garrison who had been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer who passed away in November 2013 at the age of 56. According to Sandy Berder-Miller. The first walk had 4 people who bravely hiked Montana Hwy 508 (the Yaak River Road) to raise money for Linda’s medical bills. The following year the walk expanded and became part of the WINGS activities in Lincoln County. Walkers ask for pledges by the mile or a lump sum. In 2016, the walk was moved to August so it would not conflict with the May WINGS Live Auction. In 2017 the walkhas grown to over 40 people and was held on Labor Day week-end. The walkers have collected over $14k in donations. Some participants are even of the four legged variety that have also collected pledges.

Lincoln County Wings Coordinator, Karen Stickney said “the communities of Libby, Troy and the Yaak continue to surprise our Wings volunteers with their generosity and support for our local cancer patients.” She advised that Lincoln County Wings events last year raised approximately $75,000.

Even if folks can’t attend any of our events, donations to Wings can still be sent now or anytime throughout the year, to Wings, P.O. Box 1160, Libby, Montana 59923 or donations can be dropped off at First Montana Bank in either Libby or Troy.

If you have any questions about any of these events, or would like to help, please call Karen Stickney at 293-4380 or 293-7698.
