Dan Mueller, 77, Of Libby

In Loving Memory

Daniel Joseph Mueller

June 6, 1942 – Sept. 2, 2019

Dan Mueller passed away peacefully on Sept. 2, 2019. He was born on June 6, 1942, in Billings, the oldest of six children born to Joe and Virginia (Kennedy) Mueller. He was raised in Billings, where he attended Billings Central Catholic High School, graduating with the class of 1960. He attended Carroll College in Helena, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology. He later earned a master’s degree in education and teaching at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash.

His teaching career began in the Catholic school system in Billings and Forsyth. He accepted a teaching job in Libby in 1968 and, for the next 35 years, he taught generations of junior high school students and then high school students the finer points of English and Drivers’ Education. Following his retirement from Libby High School in 2003, Dan continued to reside in Libby, where he pursued his hobbies of making stained glass, tending his greenhouse solarium, and reading. He spent winter months in Billings, venturing as often as possible to the family cabin in Red Lodge. Dan made Libby his home for nearly 50 years, until he moved permanently to Billings in 2017.

Dan lived a life built on faith and compassion, serving as Eucharistic Minister and Liturgist at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Libby, as Exalted Ruler of Libby Elks Lodge #2231 and Grand Knight of the Libby Knights of Columbus Council 3250.

Dan is survived by a large family who will miss him every day: siblings Diann (Mick Wolff), Kathy, Don (Sue Anderson), John (Sue Agnew) of Billings, and T.J. of Huntley; many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins; and his many cherished friends!

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Virginia Mueller.

A celebration of Dan’s life will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 2055 Woody Drive, Billings.

Memorials in memory of Dan can be made to: Buses of Yellowstone Preservation Trust, PO Box 1522, Red Lodge, MT 59068; or Billings Catholic Schools Foundation, PO Box 31158, Billings, MT 59107.
