Trojan Track: Kings of the Road Hope to Finish Strong

By Jim Dasios

Saturday, May 5, 5:30 a.m.  You’ve been up for at least an hour, time to fly. The Troy Trojans concluded the “regular season” part of the 2022 – 23 track campaign. Traveling some 179 miles, (358 round trip), they were set to complete in the twenty-three team Missoula KLH Invitational track meet, a last tune up before the playoffs District, divisional and state ahead.

When asked about the weather coach Neil Newton responded, “When we got to Missoula, (about 9 a.m.) it was still raining. The rain eventually stopped.” Newton continued. “The rest of the day overcast, coal and neat.” Not the best day to be setting and record. “The kids got up real early today, but they deal with it. That’s what I like about them.”

The meet also served as a last chance for the Trojans to compete argument teams from District 6-13 Teams they’ll see again at divisional with the top six in each event being recognized, Trojan freshman Nolan Morris placed in two events. Morris time of 2:11 in the 800 meter was good for fifth place. A personal best 4:59 in 1600 run put him in sixth place. Sophomore Kempton Sloan leaped 5’8’’ to place third, in the high jump and freshman Carson Orr soared 35’9’’ to place sixth in the triple jump.

On the girls, freshman Kaylee Meyers seems to get better every week her time of 13:52 was good for sixth place in the 3200 meter. It was also a new personal best.

On a negative note, Trojan “weight man” Jacob Gromley did not complete in the meet, sadly, Gromley will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury. Gromley was a consistent performer in the javelin, shotput and discuss. He’ll be missed.

The Troy Trojans are road warriors. Always, have been. Whether it’s football, basketball and especially track, our isolation in the jungles of Northwest Montana keep it that way. We must get out to play. I wouldn’t think that any school, any class, this side of the divide, roams as far.

Lets look at this past track season. Troy attended six regular season track meets. All mileage is round trip. Two meets in Libby, one in Eureka, one in Bigfork, two meets in Missoula, and the ultimate goal, state in Butte. The Troy track team traveled a distance of 2,336 miles this past season. Top That!

Now what does all this mean? Simple. The Trojan track team needs an airplane.

Last Saturday (5-13-23) the Trojans traveled to Eureka to compete at the District 7-B track meet. The top six finishers in each event move on to divisionals in Missoula. Travel on Trojans!
