9/11 Anniversary triggers series of Letters to the Editor…

September 13, 2021—

Over the past weekend America remembered 9/11.

I remember watching the horrific events unfold with my visibly shaken history students all that day.

I also remember our
community coming together by meeting at River Park and the Fairgrounds to reaffirm our commitment to each other in spite of the devastation caused by this act of hate. But to this historian,
the most poignant event of this past weekend was the speech given by #43, former
President George W. Bush near Shanksville, Penn.

Please allow me to highlight some of his words. Now for full disclosure, I didn’t always agree with GW; in fact, I didn’t vote for him.
But his words resonated
with me as he talked about the “audacity of evil” and the sacrifice of the first responders, the passengers and crew of Flight 93 who possibly prevented the devastation
of our capitol and our
lawmakers–many of whom are still serving this day.

What really impressed me were these words:

“And we have seen
growing evidence that the dangers to our country
can come not only across borders but from violence within. There is little cultural overlap between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home. But their disdain for pluralism in their disregard for human life, in their determination to defile national symbols, they are children of the same foul spirit. And it is our continuing duty to confront them.”

Bush’s words were an indictment of the MAGA
insurrectionists but also of his party who pampers them and the person whom the January 6 terrorists wanted to install by force.

When I look at January 6th, the actions of the former president and his party should horrify all decent Americans. As Jennifer Rubin describes in the Washington Post, one can imagine how their actions and rhetoric would have sounded if the other “children of the same foul spirit” were radical
Islamists. When then-President Trump announced that he ‘loved the insurrectionists; and saying ‘they’re very special’.  No president and no party could have
survived if the object of these remarks were foreign rather than domestic terrorists.

The Republican Party continues to minimize, deflect, or ignore the January 6th terrorist attack.

Would Mitch McConnell ask senators as a “favor”
not to investigate the 9/11 attacks? Or, imagine Kevin McCarthy insisting not to investigate 9/11 because
the other side was simply seeking to score political points? In each case, if the January 6th terrorists were
foreigners, we would have
accused Republicans as
anti-American, or traitors.

After listening to Bush’s speech, it is hard not to realize that today’s GOP operates outside of and is a threat to peaceful democratic and
multiracial democracy.

September 13, 2021—

I’ve been thinking about writing this letter for some time, but decided to wait until after this year’s
9/11 Memorial Services.

Wow! Twenty years
since international terrorists attacked our nation in NYC,
at the Pentagon and on Flight 93. I want to specifically write about Flight 93.

When the towers went down and the plane flew into the Pentagon, it was obvious we were under attack – the passengers and crew of Flight 93 caught in the middle of that horrific day. Yet they took action.

They could have done nothing and allowed the
foreign terrorists to fly the plane into what many believed was going to be the Capitol building. Instead,
they made their choice; they took a damn vote! It wasn’t rigged. The outcome wasn’t stolen from a passenger who thought the vote should have gone the other way. They weren’t robbed. They voted, took action, and one of the heros of the flight – Todd Beamer – said, “Are you ready? Okay, LET’S ROLL!” He and the other heroes on the flight saved the Capitol building from extensive damage and saved untold numbers of lives working in and around the Capitol building.

These were international terrorists who put forth months of planning to put fear in the American people and disrupt the workings of our government.

On January 6, 2021, again after months of planning, the very same thing almost happened. These were domestic terrorists, criminals, treasonous individuals who carried the American flag and the “Back the Blue” flags. As they surged forward to spread their hate, they too were shouting, “Are you ready? Let’s roll.” NOT to save the Capitol, but to destroy it and our democracy! They were actually beating the men in blue with the Back the Blue flags and the American flag. The two instances were the same.

The 9/11 international terrorists weren’t protesting. Neither were the January 6 insurrectionists. They both were trying to do the exact same thing; disrupt the
regular flow of our government and change the results of a legal election for the President of the United
States based on a lie.

The men in blue were beaten with the flags, swore at and called racist names. Those who attacked were all followers of Trump. The guy who started the big lie even before the election was held. The insurrectionists had bought into the lie. Logic and reasoning were beyond them.

What have we become as a nation?

Now, these very same people have been told to “drink bleach,” ingest fish aquarium cleaner, take
medicine designed for farm animals, and more. All to cure or prevent Covid—a virus that has already killed 650,000 American citizens.

Have we gone nuts? Our citizens being talked into becoming insurrectionists based on lies, using crazy remedies – based on lies – to combat a virus.

Please stay home in your little cubicle, living in your alternate universe. The world will be a much better place.
