Meet and chat with a current Fire Lookout – learn what it’s like to live and work in a lookout.
See and experience a lookout’s tools of the trade – pull on a crosscut saw, meet a pack mule, and watch a packing demo.
Take home a signed limited edition poster of the iconic Hornet Lookout, created by local artist Pete Thomas. Event Celebration Price $20.
Celebrate our lookout legacy with a visit by Smokey Bear!
Take a step back in time to learn about Hornet’s rich early history with a guided tour of the historic lookout. Tour leaves in the morning from Big Creek with a bus ride (1.5 hours) and short hike (1 mile).
We will be offering the first in a series of Historic Lookout Posters by graphic designer Pete Thomas. Seems like a perfect time to launch the project. Join us at Big Creek Environmental Center to purchase your signed poster. If that doesn’t fit your plans, we’ll have it available on our website STORE soon!
Pete Thomas is an award-winning illustrator, designer and writer based out of Whitefish, Montana. For nearly 30 years he has combined his love and passion for the outdoors with his creative pursuits. He has had the good fortune of working with several top outdoor industry brands, nonprofits and publications, on projects ranging from posters and logos to websites and even ski designs. Pete is an avid cyclist and skier and has found himself visiting many of the fire lookouts around Northwest Montana. This past year, he joined the board at Northwest Montana Lookout Association to help promote events, raise awareness and create unique collectibles to support the organization. The Hornet Mountain poster is the first in an ongoing series of art capturing different lookouts in the region.
